Working with multiple footage formats in projects and sequences

You can combine multiple footage formats in a sequence. Understanding frame rates and frame sizes will help you decide on your sequence settings.

View footage frame rates and frame size

  • Choose List View in the Project panel to see lots of information about clips, including frame rates and footage dimensions.

Clips are conformed to match sequence settings

Whatever format and frame rate your clips have, they will be adjusted to match the settings of a sequence they are added to. By default, oversized clips are cropped.

Create a sequence based on clip format

  • Drag one or more clips onto the New Item menu in the Project panel to create a new sequence with settings that match the first clip you selected.

Change sequence settings

You can change most sequence settings, including the frame rate and frame size, by opening the sequence and choosing Sequence > Sequence Settings.

Automatically adjust clip size to match sequence dimensions

  • After editing a clip with a mismatched frame size into a sequence, you can choose to automatically adjust the clip frame size to match the sequence. Right-click on the clip in the sequence, and then choose Set to Frame Size.

Use preferences to automatically change mismatched clip frame sizes

  • Choose Edit > Preferences > Media (Windows) or Premiere Pro CC > Preferences > Media (macOS) and select an option in the Default Media Scaling option.

Manually adjust clip scale

  • Adjust clip frame size in the Effect Controls panel. Select the clip to see the settings under the Motion effect heading.
